Meaning of Al-Waliyy
The One who is the loving friend, protector, and helper of the believers. He is close to those who are righteous and supports them in all their affairs with love and care.

The Quran defines them in Surah Yunus (10:62-63): 'Unquestionably, [for] the allies of Allah there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. Those who believed and were fearing Allah.' They are simply the true believers who have Taqwa (God-consciousness). It is a status any sincere Muslim can aspire to.
Al-Waliyy (The Friend/Protector) is a name of Allah. Al-Wali (The Patron/Governor) is also a name of Allah that emphasizes His governance and authority. They are very similar, but Al-Waliyy often carries a stronger connotation of loving friendship and protective care.
The opposite is taking the Shaitan (Satan) or Taghut (anything worshipped besides Allah) as your 'waliyy'. The Quran states that Allah brings His friends from darkness to light, while the 'awliya' of the disbelievers bring them from light into darknesses.
